INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Institute for Alternative Futures offers internship opportunities. We are looking for curious and forward-thinking individuals from a variety of perspectives, interested in helping communities and organizations choose more wisely and create the futures they prefer. In our small think-tank and consulting environment, interns learn futures skills they can use no matter what career(s) they ultimately pursue. Interns will work individually and with IAF staff to research and write on key trends and developments in a wide variety of issues related to the future. Full-time and part-time internships are available, and the specific dates are negotiable. The internship is open to graduate students and recent graduates, as well as those with a few years of work experience. The internship is unpaid, though we do offer a stipend to cover commuting expenses. If you are interested in applying, please email a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to futurist@altfutures.org and put “Intern Application – [your last name]” in the subject line. Please address your cover letter to the Institute and include:

  1. Reasons for your interest in the IAF internship.
  2. If you have a specific idea of a futures project that you would like to work on while at IAF, then provide a brief description. Examples include but are not limited to developing trend updates for a particular set of IAF scenarios or forecasts available on IAF's website; forecasts for your own area of interest; or the next State of the Health Equity Movement update for IAF’s Disparity Reducing Advances project (available at http://altfutures.org/draproject).
  3. How you heard about us.
  4. Your intended period of interning with us (e.g., January 2nd through May 31st), and whether you intend to work full-time or part-time.

We will consider applications on a rolling basis.

Please note that for international applicants, IAF expects the applicant to take responsibility and the lead for getting a visa. Upon request, IAF can provide documentation for this purpose, such as a formal letter of acceptance to the internship program.
