ESRC Project on Genomics
and Society:
Priorities for Social Science Research
The UK Government's Economic
and Social Research Council (ESRC) commissioned a team led by
the Institute for Alternative Futures (IAF) and the Centre
for Research on Innovation and Competition (CRIC) to use the
futures methodologies of forecasting and scenarios to explore the
future of genomics and society. The aim was to provide a view of
emerging issues in genomics and biotechnology, and to help identify
areas where social science research related to genomics could make
its greatest contribution.

| Overview
and Forecasts of the Applications of Genomics |
| This overview section describes
the field of genomics and provides forecasts for likely advances
in health care, agricultural and other applications over the
next 15 years. |

| Key
Drivers of Genomics: Forecasts for 2015 |
| This section presents forecasts
for ten key drivers shaping genomics between now and 2015. The
discussion of each driver includes an explanation, key questions,
and three forecasts describing possibilities for 2015. |

| CRIC
Report of Genomics and Social Science |
| This section presents an initial
appraisal of future issues that may confront the social science
research agendas in the context of the development of genomic
science and technology. It uses the ESRC thematic priorities
for social science research as a framework for exploring the
different dimensions of these future agendas. |

| Genomics
and Society: Four Scenarios for 2015 |
| This section uses four scenarios
to illustrate four divergent pathways to 2015. Genomics,
Inc is a "best guess extrapolation" of key drivers
shaping genomics. Broken Promises explores hard times
for genomics. Out of Our Control combines both challenges
and failures for some genomic applications with success in others.
Genomics for All explores the successful and visionary
development of genomics. |

| Report
on the Scenario Workshop |
| This section contains the report
from the ESRC Genomics Scenario Workshop held in January 2002
at the London City University. The Workshop used the reports
on Key Drivers, Thematic Priority areas, and Scenarios for Genomics
and Society to consider how social science research could make
its greatest contribution to understanding and shaping the evolution
of genomics. |
